Fabien teased us a lot during the last weeks about its new bike. He did not tell us what was his choice – just told us that it would be a great support for a bikecheck. here is the check !
So, Fabien, who are you ?
I’m 21 yo and i’m living in Rennes, Bretagne in france. I’m fan of mountainbiking since i was ten. I started then my first competitions for my pleasure, and i ran also some DH races in Bretagne also. Now, my preferred activity is the long-way races.
I work on a bikeshop for one year now – and i think this bikecheck is a good opportunity for me to place an ad. I’m looking for a long internship (2 years) on a new bikeshop – close to Bordeaux, Toulouse or Pau. So, if a owner of a bikeshop read this bikecheck, i’m available and motivated
What was your bike before? not a too painful divorce ?
I have a customized Lapierre Spicy 516. I thought this big all mountain will be the perfect ride to mix cross country and more engaged races. And i was right. But there were a meeting of various elements : a big crash on a DH, the 29er temptation, and at the end the weight of my Spicy was too important for my current activities.
Concerning the divorce, no, it was not too painful since i already knew the bike that was waiting for me !
During many weeks, i was like a kid some hours before the opening of his presents for Christmas.
When you were a kid, do you prefer Flash Mac Queen or Flash Gordon ?
Both Flash Mc Queen and Flash Gordon.. i’m a fast stuntman in my nature.
How did you find this limited edition Troy Lee Designs ?
I did an internship in a bikeshop (Spad – Rennes). A day, i was leaving the workshop and find a big box coming from Specialized. When i open the carton, something was shining inside… After this sweet meeting, I find some informations about this 29er frame – and i was already fully in love with the design and colors created by Troy Lee Designs. I understood quickly that the program of this bike could match my wishes. I benefit from a demo day organized by my Shop and Specialized to test an Evo Carbon. This test confirms my opinion.
So, last stage was the negociation with my boss and of course, i needed to sell the Spicy to get the money for this new project. But you have to know that it’s easy to sell a Lapierre as a second hand in france.
Can you explain your choices for the drivetrain & others components ?
I want for the bike premium components – but flashy ones. So my choice goes to a full SRAM X0 group for the drivetrain and brakes system. It’s non conventional black XO since i wanted some chrome effect to match the philosophy of the bike
For suspensions, the bike needs a 140mn fork – even if 29ers are more and more in, there are not many choice. I find a Fox Talas with the latest CTD sytem and kashima treatment of course. For the wheels, i wanted something light but strong. Mavic Crossmax ST is definitively the choice of confidence for many rides.
So, can you describe us your feelings after the first laps ?
Wonderful and magical !
This a real funny bike. but funny does not mean that it’s not performant. This is the perfect ride for people who are asking for both a reactive bike uphilling and an easy-to-ride bike in descents.
How people look at you when you ride your Stumpy ?
It turns heads, no doubts ! you don’t buy this kind of bike if you want to be discreet. I receive some congratulations but the real test will be a huge race mid-june.. i will give you all the feed-backs i will receive behing my lovely cockpit !
If you have to tune again your bike, one more component on your target ?
Good question.. i think that chromed hubs could be nice on this mount.
What you would never remove from your bike ?
I’m very pleased with my fox suspensions. and i’m very picky concerning the works of my suspensions !
Thank you Fabien and a lot of good things on your funny bike
